The lack of a clear boundary for mission areas means that you have to be cautious when making your way across the map. Fortunately, when the firefight broke out, there were only a handful of soviet soldiers with terrible aim hanging out in that sleepy village, so they were quickly dispatched, and I found the intel that pointed me to where exactly my target was being held.įrom there it was onward to a much more heavily-guarded fortress for the rescue. Zooming in on a guard tags them both in your view and on the map, so it pays to take your time and try to scope out everyone. That’s the advice I would have given myself if I could travel back in time to a few minutes before I walked right into a guard I’d missed hiding behind a wall. I gave the village a wide berth, riding around to the other side where a ridge overlooked it so I could get a better view with my binoculars. Where most prior Metal Gear games would drop you off right at the mission location so you could get right into the sneaking (and inevitable frantically running and shooting), here it leaves you in the desert with a horse (though no sign of the wolf), point you in the right direction, and leave you to it. Good reconnaissance becomes absolutely vital, fundamentally altering the rhythm of the game. Some intel in a nearby village pointed me to his exact location, which was necessary if the extraction was going to be as precise and surgical as I intended it to be (Spoiler alert: It was not). One of my former comrades was captured by mysterious operatives and was being held in a nearby facility. That would have to wait for another day I had a rescue operation to complete. The horizon stretched out in front of me, an enticing and expansive landscape I was eager to explore. I was dropped off on a ledge overlooking the rocky desert of Afghanistan. I climbed the stairs and walked in on an apparently off-duty guard, whom I reflexively knocked out with a tranquilizer dart.

This also lets you isolate the PS2 and SMB share completely from the network by placing them in their own subnet, if you so desire for security reasons. In my case, I set a static IP for the PS2 and also for my SMB share so that it would be easy to find. You may need to hit the Reconnect option. We setup the SMB share with a username and password so enter those values in the network config ( Figure 7) and save changes as in Figure 6. The below section describes how to setup the SMB Select Network config in the main menu ( Figure 4) and set the IP address of your PS2 and also the IP address of your network share (SMB share). Now we set the network settings so that the PS2 knows where to connect to. Remember to hit OK using the O key on your controller, and then go back to the main menu ( Figure 4) and select Save Changes using the O button on the controller as seen in Figure 6. Hit the O button on the PS2 controller to select the Settings option first.īy default, Ethernet is disabled in this menu and we want to enable the ETH device start mode and set the Default menu to ETH Games as seen in Figure 5.įigure 5: Enable ETH device start mode in the OPNPS2LDR Settings Menu Hit the Start button on your controller to go to the settings menu as in Figure 4. You will see that it opens a screen with an error saying No HDD detected or similar. Select this option by pressing the X key on your PS2 controller. This special program allows the PS2 to use its ethernet connection to connect to a SMB share on your network. To boot a game off the network you need to select the OPNPS2LDR option which stands for the Open PS2 Loader. You will see the FMCB splash screen as in Figure 2 and then it continues to the FMCB bootloader menu as in Figure 3. The first step is to plug the card in the first (or left-most) memory card slot in the PS2 and restart your PS2. As of this writing the FMCB version I used was 1.966.įigure 1: 64MB PS2 memory card with FreeMcBoot installed I tried and failed since my PS2 was not hacked or modded to install uLaunchELF so that it could read FMCB off a USB drive, and therefore purchasing the memory card is the best way to go about maximizing use of If you do want to make this card yourself you need to follow the tutorial on the FMCB link above and try. It is amazing that people sell these things even today and that the prices are quite low relative to trying to do this yourself and buying a nearly $100 PS2 memory card adapter on eBay. I purchased this memory card ( Figure 1) onĪmazon for $17 including taxes. However, since it did not have a hardware mod-chip installed I decided to try to do a soft mod by using a hacked memory card with the FMCB firmware pre-installed. I had a PS2 Slim model SCPH-77001 which is supported by FreeMcBoot (FMCB). You have to use a wired ethernet connection for this. The CD/DVD reader had stopped working and after a few tries I gave up and decided to use the FreeMcBootīootloader to modify the PS2 so that it could load games off an SMB share on the network. Keeping the theme of re-using old hardware, I decided to take the non-working PlayStation 2 (PS2) off my brother’s hands and try to get it to work. To say it's a nice-looking game is an understatement, on a similar scale to "Twilight Princess takes a while to finish" or "Mario Strikers online makes us a bit upset." We could happily sail the ocean for hours, swimming with turtles and gaping at whales, with no objective other than to take pretty pictures with the camera, but there's an actual adventure in there as well. But if you're lucky, you'll chance upon a sublime piece of natural architecture, such as a cave system filled with spindles of rock, or a forest of coral spires, or a fissure that reveals a route into a bottomless and heart-thumping darkness. Most of the time you'll be swimming in the pleasant shallows over sun-dappled coral reefs, the fishy residents of which will regard you with indifference.
